Islamic Finance news Roadshow in Canada
Expanding the Realms of Islamic Finance

On Wednesday the 10th November 2010 the Islamic Finance news Roadshow, now in its 3rd year, will visit Toronto, Canada. The Roadshow series is set to offer participants a comprehensive industry insight through a series of events in key developing Islamic financial markets.

The IFN 2010 Roadshow will visit 17 cities across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, North America and Europe.

The Roadshow is designed as a comprehensive one-day event, consisting of plenary sessions, presentations and keynote addresses.

Signs are positive for Islamic finance in Canada, which has a potentially large and stable market. As the Muslim population is projected to grow to 1.5 million by 2017, it is timely for Canadian financial institutions to harness opportunities to offer Shariah compliant products, services and advice.

A current gap exists where Islamic financial instruments, and especially Islamic retail banking, could facilitate and meet this demand. Canada’s largest banks are said to hold an untapped cash reserve from immigrants and the Muslim community.

The growing demand for Shariah compliant securities may lead the Canadian government and companies to begin issuing Islamic bonds. HSBC Bank Canada recently announced that they may offer US$500 million of Sukuk, and three other government related companies are said to soon follow suit. In addition, Canada is looking to tap wealth in the Gulf to help diversify its funding.

Key focus areas include:
Session One: What is Islamic Finance and Where are We Now?
Session Two: Canada and the Islamic Financial Markets
Session Three: Islamic Products: What Can and Can’t be Done?
Session Four: Issuing and Investing in the Islamic Financial Markets
Presentation: Walid Hejazi - Assistant Professor of International Business Economics, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto

Confirmed speakers include:
Monem A Salam - Saturna Capital
Jeffery S Graham - Borden Ladner Garvais
Steven Watts - KPMG
Omar Kalair - UM Financial
Dany H. Assaf - Bennet Jones LLP
Glen W Roberts - Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal

The event has been set up to facilitate discussion and debate on how to advance Islamic finance, and how you could participate in the industry’s overall wealth and prosperity, given its projected average global growth of 25%-40%.

This free-of-charge to attend event is aimed at senior industry practitioners interested in understanding more about the possibilities the Islamic finance industry has to offer.
