Mr. Daud Vicary Abdullah
Daud Vicary Abdullah is currently the managing director of DVA Consulting, an Islamic finance advisory company and a partner at Gateway Islamic Advisory. He is the former president and CEO of the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), The Global University of Islamic Finance, which is a unique postgraduate institution focused only on Islamic finance. He has been in the finance and consulting industry for over 44 years, with significant experience in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Since 2002, he has focused exclusively on Islamic finance where he has contributed to a number of books on the subject and has co-authored a book on Islamic finance titled ‘Islamic Finance: Why it makes sense’.
Prior to INCEIF, Daud was the global Islamic finance leader with Deloitte; acting CEO of Asian Finance Bank, an Islamic bank based in Malaysia; and was the first managing director of Hong Leong Islamic Bank. During his time at Deloitte, he helped to establish the first Islamic bank in China.
Daud is a chartered Islamic finance professional and a qualified accountant, was the recipient of the 2015 LARIBA award for Riba-Free Finance and received a congressional citation for his work in Islamic finance.
Currently, Daud is very active in the field of Islamic social finance and is a member of the Islamic finance committee at the Malaysia Institute of Accountants and a member of the board of trustees of the RFI Foundation, among others.
Dr. Hurriyah El Islamy
Executive Board Member, Badan Pengelola Keuangan Haji Indonesia
Dr Hurriyah El Islamy is currently serving as an executive board member of Badan Pengelola Keuangan Haji, an independent sovereign agency empowered by law to manage the Indonesian Hajj pilgrim funds. She was named as one of the most active Islamic finance activists by Bank Indonesia and has global experience in Islamic finance having served as the director for CIMB Group responsible for all Islamic businesses of the group. She was also the director of Capinnova Investment Bank, an Islamic investment arm of the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait after she served Kuwait Finance House Bahrain leading the Compliance and Anti-Money Laundering Department there while (also) serving as the legal counsel.
Dr Hurriyah remains active in the Islamic finance industry as she is the advisor in Islamic finance to the Astana International Finance Centre, a board member and strategic advisor to Islamic Fintech Alliance and is also listed as an IMF expert in Islamic finance and capital markets. She has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree, a Master’s degree in corporate law and a PhD.
Dato Paduka Iqbal Khan
Chief Executive Officer, Fajr Capital (2012 Recipient of Royal Award for Islamic Finance)
Iqbal Ahmad Khan is CEO of Fajr Capital and a member of the boards of directors of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, Cravia Group, GEMS Education, Jadwa Investment and National Petroleum Services. Prior to Fajr Capital, he was the founding CEO of HSBC Amanah, where he built the business and team over eight years into one of the fastest-growing and most successful emerging businesses in the HSBC Group.
Iqbal is a long-time advocate of the Islamic financial services industry, serving as an advisor to government initiatives in Brunei, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the UAE and the UK. He holds a Master’s degree in political science and international relations and a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in physics and chemistry, both from Aligarh Muslim University. He is the recipient of several industry and global accolades, including the Royal Award for Islamic Finance, a biannual prize presented by the King of Malaysia, and a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice-president and prime minister of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai.
Professor Joseph Cherian
Practice Professor of Finance Director, Centre for Asset Management Research & Investments (CAMRI), NUS Business School
Joseph Cherian is a practice professor of finance and a director of the Centre for Asset Management Research & Investments at the NUS Business School, where he also serves on the school's executive education board.
Joseph was formerly an executive-in-residence at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management (2008–09), where he remains an emeritus member of the Johnson Dean's Advisory Council after serving two terms (2009–17). Prior to that, Joe was the managing director, global head and CIO of the Quantitative Strategies Group within Credit Suisse Alternative Investments in New York, where he had direct responsibility for over US$67 billion in client assets managed to a quantitative discipline. Joseph joined Credit Suisse in 2004 from Banc of America Capital Management, also in New York, where he was the managing director and senior portfolio manager of asset allocation funds.
Previously, Joseph was an associate professor of finance at Boston University and has authored numerous articles for financial journals, and serves on the scientific advisory board of Nipun Capital, a boutique hedge fund based in San Francisco. Joe has or had appointments at the Ministry of Manpower’s CPF Advisory Panel; the Singapore International Mediation Centre’s Panel of Technical Experts and the National Research Foundation’s Early Stage Venture Fund Evaluation Panel, among others.
Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from MIT and a Master of Science degree and PhD in finance from Cornell University.
Mr. Kunio Watanabe
President & Chief Executive Officer, Nomura Asset Management Co., Ltd.
Kunio Watanabe is the director, president and CEO of Nomura Asset Management Co (NAM), a position held since April 2014. He is also the head of the Asset Management Division of Nomura Holdings.
Kunio joined NAM in April 2009 from Nomura Securities Co, a sister company of NAM. Prior to joining NAM, his positions included head of the Equity Division of Nomura Bank (Switzerland) from July 1997 to June 1999; managing director of the Financial Institutions Department of Nomura Securities Co from July 2004 to April 2006; and co-president and head of the Wealth Management Division of Nomura International (Hong Kong) from April 2007 to March 2009.
Since joining NAM, Kunio has held various positions including senior managing director responsible for the Advisory Fund Management Department, Global Index Strategy Department and Quantitative Active Product Department from April 2010 to January 2012; senior corporate managing director responsible for the Retail Clients Division from April 2012 to March 2013l; and the Overseas Clients Division from April 2013 to March 2014.
Kunio graduated from Keio University, Tokyo with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in March 1985, earned a diploma in business studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science in June 1989 and has an MBA from Warwick University obtained in September 1990.
Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar

Dr Mohd Daud Bakar is currently the chairman of the Shariah Advisory Council at Bank Negara Malaysia, Securities Commission Malaysia and the Labuan Financial Services Authority. Dr Mohd Daud was previously the deputy vice-chancellor at the International Islamic University Malaysia. Dr Mohd Daud is a Shariah board member of various financial institutions, including AAOIFI (Bahrain), Morgan Stanley (Dubai), Bank of London and Middle East (London), Noor Islamic Bank (Dubai), Jadwa-Russell Islamic Fund (Saudi Arabia) and Salama Islamic Insurance, among many others.
Dato Mohammad Faiz Azmi
Executive Chairman, PwC Malaysia
Mohammad Faiz Azmi is the executive chairman of PwC Malaysia and was the leader of the PwC Global Islamic Finance Team practice from 2007 to September 2012. He was also previously the financial services leader for Malaysia.
He has over 29 years of experience in the audit and business advisory services of financial institutions both in the UK and Malaysia and has also been involved in the audits of clients in the banking, healthcare, power and construction sectors.
Faiz serves as the chairman of the Malaysia Accounting Standards Board, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and also a council member of the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants. In addition, he is a member of The Association of Chartered Islamic Finance Professionals Malaysia and chairs the Asian-Oceanian Standard-Setters Group on Islamic Finance. He is also a member of the International Accounting Standards Board Committee on Islamic Product/Finance.
Faiz was educated in Malaysia and the UK and read law at the University of Durham before being called to the English Bar.
Mr. Oliver Warner
Environmental & Social Consultant, International Finance Corporation
While for many environmental, social and governance (ESG) is a new term on the ascent, Oliver Warner has been working with, and in, financial institutions for over 16 years across sustainable finance, ESG and responsible finance/lending. Currently, he is the managing director of Enso Advisory based in Singapore, where he has also been retained by the International Finance Corporation working on investments in financial institutions and the World Bank on early-stage infrastructure projects in ASEAN. He has a unique and strong understanding of the practical and pragmatic application of sustainability in the real world and has worked on deals ranging from under US$10 million to over US$41 billion.
Oliver has substantial first-hand experience in the field working with CEOs and operators and investment teams, on a global scale, from mining in the high Andes to power generation in Malaysia and has also worked on projects with many household names. His work includes supporting financial institutions in the development and implementation of their ESG processes (including adherence to the Equator Principles), undertaking lenders’ E&S due diligence, assisting those seeking finance in navigating and understanding and meeting financiers’ ESG expectations. He is an environmental scientist by background, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London, a chartered environmental professional and the author of published guidance and reports on ESG, including for the Equator Principles Association.
Mr. Ramlie Kamsari
Chief Executive Officer, Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn. Bhd.
Ramlie Kamsari is CEO of Nomura Islamic Asset Management, the global hub for Islamic asset management businesses for Nomura Asset Management Group internationally. He is also responsible for the business development of Nomura Asset Management Group’s investment offerings to institutional investors in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Middle East and other selected markets. He also heads and oversees the marketing and client services team in Nomura Asset Management Malaysia.
Ramlie has extensive experience in the global capital markets and financial services industry, spanning over 20 years in Singapore and Malaysia, and covering the areas of global sales, advisory services and deal executions of capital market products, listed derivatives products, insurance and risk transfer solutions, and most recently, customized global investment solutions for Shariah and ethical investments. He joins Nomura from CIMB Group in Malaysia, where he served for more than 10 years holding several senior positions. During that period, he was involved in several landmark deals and transactions such including the award-winning Khazanah US$850 million exchangeable Sukuk and the establishment of the world’s first Islamic UCITS platform (domiciled in Dublin) among others.
Ramlie is currently an advisory board member of IFN Events (a unit of the renowned Islamic Finance news publication responsible for well-regarded industry events held internationally in Asia, the Middle East and Europe). Previously, he was an advisory board member of EFICA (an industry initiative for ethical finance led jointly by Thomson Reuters and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and under the patronage of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry) for a two-year tenor in 2014 and 2015. He was also a council member for the Islamic Finance Council of Malaysia-US Chamber of Commerce (a not-for-profit organization that serves as an advocacy, educational and networking platform to promote and raise awareness of commercial opportunities between Malaysian and US companies) based in Washington DC.
Ramlie actively participates in industry consultative sessions conducted by Bank Negara Malaysia, Securities Commission Malaysia and Bursa Malaysia. He has also served the Derivatives Consultative Panel of Bursa Malaysia, the Malaysian Futures Broking Association and the Malaysian Insurance and Takaful Brokers Association in various capacities. He is also a regular speaker on Islamic asset management and Shariah and socially responsible investing at international conferences.
Ramlie holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Western Sydney in Australia and a graduate diploma in financial management from the Singapore Institute of Management. He has also attended the Wharton Leadership Development Program at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the INSEAD Leadership Program in Fontainebleau, France and Singapore. He holds the Capital Markets Services Representative’s Licence from the Securities Commission Malaysia and has also passed the Capital Markets and Financial Advisory Services Examination in Singapore.
Datuk Seri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan
Chief Executive Officer, Khazanah Nasional Berhad
Shahril Ridza Ridzuan joined Khazanah on the 20th August 2018 from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) where he was CEO. Prior to the EPF, he was the managing director of Malaysian Resources Corporation. He currently sits on the boards of Pengurusan Danaharta and Iskandar Investment. He holds a Master of Arts (First Class) degree from Cambridge University and a Bachelor of Civil Law (First Class) degree from Oxford University.
Datuk Syed Zaid Albar
Chairman, Securities Commission Malaysia
Syed Zaid Albar was appointed the executive chairman of Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) on the 1st November 2018. He was previously the managing partner of Albar & Partners. Before joining the SC, he relinquished all his interest in Albar & Partners.
A lawyer by training, Syed has over 38 years of experience in legal practice predominantly in the fields of corporate law, capital markets, conventional banking and Islamic finance. He has been recognized for his contribution and achievements in the legal practice through numerous domestic and international awards, including the award of ‘Leading Individual’ in the area of banking and finance by The Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2003-13), among others.
Syed has also served on the Islamic law review committee of Bank Negara Malaysia and the appeals committee of Bursa Malaysia, among others. He has a degree in law from the UK, is a barrister at law of Lincoln’s Inn in the UK and is an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
Mr. Wataru Ogihara
Senior Managing Director & Chief Investment Officer (Global Equity), Nomura Asset Management Co., Ltd.
Wataru Ogihara is the chief investment officer of equity at Nomura Asset Management Co and has over 20 years of industry experience holding major positions in investment decision and policy committees. Throughout his career with Nomura Asset Management, Wataru has been involved in various aspects of the business, including playing a key role in the investment management of Japan’s equity strategy for institutional and retail products, and assuming the role of chairman of the Japan Equities Investment Strategy Committee for eight years.
Prior to his new appointment and relocating to Singapore in April 2010, Wataru was the chief portfolio manager in the Equity Investment Department, responsible for the management of Japanese equities. During that time, he served as the vice-chairman of the investment policy committee, a platform for formulating major investment policies for global developed and emerging markets. He was also a member of the investment process review committee, where investment process and performance are reviewed for various strategies and asset classes.
Wataru started his career with Nomura in 1989. He holds an MBA in finance and accounting from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts degree in commerce from Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo.
Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz
Group Chairman, Permodalan Nasional Berhad (2018 Recipient of Royal Award for Islamic Finance)
Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz served as the governor of Bank Negara Malaysia from May 2000 to April 2016. She had an important role in managing the resolution of the financial system in 1998 during the Asian financial crisis and the consequent strong recovery of the Malaysian economy. She was also instrumental in transforming Malaysia’s financial system, including overseeing the enactment of 12 new pieces of legislation for the financial sector. During this period, the Malaysian financial system also underwent a period of progressive liberalization.
In Asia, Dr Zeti was active in strengthening cooperation and regional financial integration. In 2006, she chaired the regional task force that prepared the report for the future direction of central bank financial cooperation in the East Asian region. In the region, she was a founding member of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Asian Consultative Council, and was the first co-chair of the Financial Stability Board Regional Consultative Council Group for Asia. At the BIS, she was the chair of the BIS Central Bank Governance Group.
Dr Zeti also had an extensive role in the global development of Islamic finance, and was active in the global financial inclusion agenda. She has been an important voice for the emerging world on the many issues concerning the international financial system and on financial and economic management.
Dr Zeti is currently the co-chair of the board of governors of the Asia School of Business, established in collaboration with MIT Sloan. In May 2018, following the change in the government of Malaysia, Dr Zeti was appointed as a member of the Eminent Council to advise the government on the institutional and structural reforms required for the country. In July 2018, she was appointed as the group chairman of Perbadanan Nasional.
Dr Zeti received her PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
