Islamic Derivative Instruments
A Two-Part Online Training Program

Date:  25th & 26th January 2021

COURSE INTRODUCTION

WHY THIS COURSE?

Since their inception, Islamic derivatives have received mixed reviews. Some Islamic banks avoid them, whilst others have embraced them. These products remain controversial, although the trend is moving towards more widespread acceptance. Islamic banks which can take advantage of their powerful risk management potential to transfer-away unwanted risks, whilst controlling their use for legitimate purposes, are able to achieve higher risk-adjusted returns by focusing on their core activities, including most importantly, the provision of credit.

This course is primarily for Islamic bankers, but also conventional bankers looking to structure Shariah compliant instruments. The program provides a clear understanding of how Islamic derivatives are structured, and how they are priced, executed and governed. The course will be highly valuable for Islamic bankers whose roles require a thorough appreciation and working knowledge of these products, as well as those seeking a deeper understanding of how Islamic derivatives are applied in practice to manage risk, and/or to generate income.

The course will also include a high level of interactive discussion, analysis of examples and case studies, and thorough instruction in multiple aspects of Islamic derivatives with learnings that can be applied immediately.

  • KEY HIGHLIGHTS
    • Understand Islamic derivatives structures and pricing
    • Understand how Islamic derivatives can be used to hedge risk and/or generate income
    • Learn how Islamic derivatives transactions are governed in practice

September has got off to a strong start for dollar September has got off to a strong start for dollar-denominated Sukuk, with issuance in the first week already matching the combined total raised in July and August.

Four benchmark Sukuk have been printed so far this month: the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB)’s US$1.5 billion offering, its second in 2026; Arab National Bank’s US$750 million Additional Tier 1 Sukuk; Kuwait International Bank’s (KIB) unsecured US$500 million paper; and the Saudi government’s US$3.25 billion Sukuk. The dollar pipeline is looking promising with alrajhi bank preparing to tap the market with a Tier 2 social Sukuk.

The Saudi government issuance is notable given that Fitch Ratings had said in July that it was not anticipating any new public external US dollar sovereign Sukuk in the second half of 2026, after Saudi Arabia concluded its funding plan. Malaysia’s US$1.5 billion return to the dollar Sukuk market in July was similarly notable, coming after a five-year hiatus.
